Cedars currently offers online continuing care group therapy to our alumni network and through this project our Community Care department has come to realize the importance of providing additional online support to individuals in recovery from addiction. Cedars at Cobble Hill recently created an online, individual and group based counselling program to assist individuals in their recovery who have completed residential addiction treatment, for those who are looking for help but unable to attend substance abuse treatment, or those who need an intensive counselling experience on an outpatient basis.
Why is providing online counselling and therapy for addiction recovery important?
There are many good reasons to providing addiction counselling, recovery coaching, and therapy online. It is most important to provide support that suits the individual in need however these are a few of the things that make online therapy and counseling appealing:
Online counseling helps remove barriers an individual would normally experience when accessing therapy. For individuals who have a work schedule to navigate around, traditional times for in-person counselling can be very limited. Cedars at Cobble Hill is happy to provide an online counselling service that supports individuals who require counselling in the evenings and on the weekends. Online counselling platforms often also come with a self-signup integration utilizing online scheduling platforms that help the individuals easily secure appointment times without having to wait for availability of the therapist or counsellor. It also helps counsellors and therapists reach individuals who may be located in remote areas, or in places that do not offer addiction recovery specific counselling.
Some individuals in recovery from addiction or suffering with a mental health issue may feel impacted by the stigma involved with going to see a counsellor or therapist, regardless of what they are getting support for. By offering this therapeutic service online, it helps to eliminate the outside influence or judgement one might experience as a block to obtaining the support they need. For counselling that may involve more than one person, such as couples therapy or marriage counseling, it can also make it easier to get started online if one individual is feeling apprehensive or uncomfortable about talking to someone else about their addiction or personal details.
HELPS MINIMIZE ANXIETY
Many individuals who seek out counseling and therapy for mental health issues and substance abuse disorders may also suffer from anxiety, which can make it difficult to take the first step in seeking help. By providing counselling in an online platform, individuals can access help from the comfort of their own home. It eliminates the impact of anxiety causing external influences i.e. traffic, parking, or entering an unfamiliar environment. Some individuals prefer to communicate via a mobile device, or a computer. Online counselling also gives the client the ability to create an environment that is most comfortable for them.
At Cedars we pride ourselves on operating from an invitational, individualized approach to treatment for addictions. We believe that by providing an online platform for addictions counselling we will create a more flexible and accessible approach for individuals who may not be able to attend in-person recovery services. If online counselling feels like a fit for you, please contact the Director of Community Care – Bill Caldwell for more information.
