- Avoid temptation
Avoid anyone or anyplace that will bring your addiction into play again. If you were once an alcoholic, don’t go to that party where there will be people drinking alcohol and offering you a drink. Be kind and considerate when declining invitations and explain truthfully that right now it’s for your better interest and health to not be surrounded by the addiction that you are getting rid of.
- Create a positive and reinforcing support group
Support is a very important factor when preventing yourself from relapse, and continuing to be strong against your addiction. Surround yourself with family, friends and support groups that understand that the healthy you is far better than the addicted you and will do anything to help you along your successful path.
- Get yourself into a healthy routine and lifestyle
When you were involved in your treatment plan you followed a daily schedule and it’s important that you keep a routine going in your daily life now that you’ve left. A routine allows you to incorporate time for necessities such as meals, exercise, on-going support groups and will also keep your mind focused off of the addiction itself.
- If you relapse, it’s not the end of the world
We are all human and we all make mistakes, and during those mistakes we learn valuable lessons that we can take with us when we try again. We fall and we get back up. If you fall off, have the strength to get back on your feet and start the process over.
